Bernardi’s auction of South African Art and Collectables took place on

Monday 25 April 2016 at 18:00

The evening auction will start with a unique category – South African history and memorabilia. This features a signed autograph of the delegates to the National Convention held in Durban in 1908 & memorabilia including souvenirs, books & photographs of the Voortrekker Monument. Portraits and bronzes of Verwoerd & Swart, photographs of Vorster and of the Volksraad of 1961 are on offer, while an Anton van Wouw bronze of the hero Jopie Fourie is included in the art session.

This will be followed by Collectables with select silver, crystal, pottery and estate jewellery, including a fine Georgian silver swing-handle basket and a Victorian entrée dish with cover as well as a part canteen of Christofle “America” electroplated cutlery. The rare William Moorcroft flambé-glazed “Waratah” vase was produced for export to Australia and is not often seen on the market. An American Miller table lamp with Handel glass shade, a Bambatha Rebellion 1906 knobkierie and a Cape Dutch slave bell are sure to evoke interest. The estate jewellery selection features an 18ct gold Bulgari bracelet, a white gold and diamond eternity ring, an 18ct gold ruby-set cross, as well as George Xanthides gold and ruby pendant earrings.

The main feature of the evening will be 156 lots of South African art accompanied by select  art reference books.

An iconic Maggie Laubser oil on canvas “Landscape with Houses, Trees and Wood Carrier”, Anton van Wouw’s G. Massa maquette casting “Paul Kruger in Exile” and a posthumous “Singer Foundry” of the “White Hammer Worker” – originally commissioned by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines circa 1927 – are some of the highlights. Alexander Rose-Innes’s pastel “The Proposal”, two oil paintings “Backyard Mowbray with distant Mosque Tower” and a still life of “Hibiscus Flowers”, as well as Carl Buchner & Maurice van Essche Harlequin portraits should attract keen bidding. Also on offer are an impressive Stefan Ambenberger “Thaba’Nchu farm landscape”, Errol Boyley’s Moored boats at daybreak”, W H Coetzer “Voortrekker” etchings, Danie de Jager “Piece Unique” bronzes: “Nude Female Torso” and “Wolraad Woltemade”, Tinus de Jongh etchings and an oil “View across the Lake”, Titta Fasciotti floral still lives and landscapes, Irmin Henkel’s “Double Portrait”, of him and his wife Margot – exhibited at the Pretoria Art Museum in 1991, Otto Klar still lives, land – and seascapes will feature prominently.

Also represented are Eli Kobeli, Simon Lekgeto, Don Madge, Wessel Marais, Erich Mayer, Dirk Meerkotter, Joseph Muzondo, Hennie Potgieter, Christiaan Nice, Frans Oerder, J H Pierneef, Cecily Sash, Lucky Sibiya, Elsabe Shady, Ruth Squibb, Piet van Heerden and an Edoardo Villa painted steel sculpture “Marvo”. Under the contemporary banner will be an Olaf Bischoff & Sarel Petrus bronze, Tony de Freitas, Karlien de Villiers, Anthea Delmotte, Emily Fellows, James Harris, Martin Koch and an imposing Michael Heyns floral study, complemented by European bronzes by Clovis Masson and Christoph-Gabriel Allegrain.
