Pays Et Coste des Caffres: Empires de Monomotapa Monoemugi & C. Tirées de Sanuto, et d’autres. Par n Sanſson d’ Abbeville Geographe ordinaire du Roy – Engraved map with later hand-colouring and Cartouche found on the right hand side. (Without frame: 20 x 28.5cm) (With frame: 43.5 x 52cm) Condition report: The map is pasted down on the backing board with time staining evident. Note: This map of Southern Africa was based on the work of the Italian Sanuti brothers and also from Blaeu in the Netherlands. Much of the interior is conjectural and Sanson shows more mythical detail than in some of his Africa maps. It was commonly depicted in the seventeenth century, and in this map, that the Zambere (Zambezi) and Spiritus Rivers flowed from a common source, which has its origin in the mythical Lake Zachaf. Literature: Tooley, R.V. 1969. Collectors’ Guide to Maps of the African Continent and Southern Africa p.98 & 100 illustrates the ORIGINAL MAP.
