Mid 18th Century hand coloured copper plate engraved map. The map covers the entire continent of Africa and the island of Madagascar in detail, the well known mapped parts of the continent, which are limited to the Mediterranean Coast, Morocco the Senegambia, the Congo, South Africa, the Kingdom of Monomatapa, Abyssinia, Egypt and the southern Mediterranean Coast (Barbary) were well known to the Europeans, further south the colonial enclaves along the Niger River (Senegal & Gambia), the rest of the continent follows the Ptolemaic model, pertaining to the White Nile, shown as two lakes at the Mountains of the Moon, the map further decorated with sailing ships, additional French text with remarks & descriptive information, all enclosed by a stylised floral garland, cartouche rocaille, shell & leaf embellishment (35.5 x 40cm) (Condition report: Foxing, fading, age wearing, staining, creases to paper) Reference: https://www.geographicus.com/P/AntiqueMap/lafriquedressee-brion-1786.
