Description

Manufactured by Jacob and Josef Kohn, Teschen (Silesia), Austria, the shield-shaped back with later burgundy oilskin back and inset seat, embellished with stud detail, above a curved seat rail, over sinious bracket supports, on slender square tapered legs on Secessionist-style incised brass sabots (Total height: 97cm) (With original paper label remnant on the underside) Auctioneers note: Designed around 1899–1900 by Gustav Siegel—a star pupil of Josef Hoffmann at the Vienna School of Applied Arts—the Model 715 represents the exact birth of modern architectural furniture. Unveiled at the landmark Jacob & Josef Kohn pavilion during the 1900 Paris Exposition Universelle, this design revolutionized the industry by replacing traditional round bentwood loops with strict, geometric square-cut timber. A hallmark of Siegel’s premium work, the legs terminate in rare, geometrically incised brass sabots, creating a striking machine-age contrast. This rare high-back silhouette is a classic example of the pre-Bauhaus Vienna Secessionist movement. Reference: Jacob & Josef Kohn Trade Catalogues. (Historical Reprints). 1906 Edition, p. 28 / 1916 Edition, p. 41 illustrates the model range
