Description

possibly designed by Ludwig Kny (1869-1937) (Chief designer for Stuart Crystal), each clear glass waisted amphora-style body with rising everted and flared rim, featuring stylised etched wave bands, further depicting finely acid etched and cut terns (seagulls) over swirling waves, framed by a further geometric double wave band, on a circular rising base with conforming decoration (Height: 26cm, diameter: 16.3cm each) (Condition Minor nick evident to 1 x vase) Reference: According to our research, this highly defined, geometric maritime design represents Kny’s elite early-1930s transition era. A closely related, highly abstract variation of this “Seagulls and Waves” pattern is preserved in the British Museum Collection (Registration No. 1999,0709.1) and documented in British Glass Between the Wars (Dodsworth, p. 97, no. 319). Note: Ludwig Kny was a glass designer, working in Stourbridge, England. He was son of the Bohemian glass engraver Frederick Kny who had settled in England in the mid 19th century. Ludwig studied at Stourbridge Art School and latter in Australia, South Kensington and Paris. On the death of his father he continued the family business with his brother, joining the firm of Stuart as chief designer in 1918 till his death.
