Maker: Dobson and Sons (Thomas William Dobson), London 1891 , the hollow-cast boat-shaped body with raised everted stop-fluted gadrooned rim and integral cast open cast leaf capped c-scroll handle and over a finely engraved cursive monogram (W.E.O.) on the body, supported on a raised, figured and cast acanthus leaf crested scrolled supports, terminating on stepped hoof feet, stamped with the retailer’s mark: Dobson, Piccadilly on the underside (Condition report: Minor splits evident to body) (Mass: 360g) Provenance: This sauce boat was from the private collection of the Antarctic Explorer Captain Lawrence Edward Oates’ father -William Edward Oates (1841 – 1896) of Gestingthorpe Hall, Gestingthorpe, Essex, a wealthy landowner and Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society, thence by descent to the present owner
